Ogden is just east of me in West Haven, and it's where I go for dinner downtown, a concert at the amphitheater, or a drive up the canyon. It's the Weber County seat and the home of Weber State University, with a historic downtown and the Wasatch Mountains right behind it. The Census counted 87,321 residents in 2020 and estimated 89,510 by July 2025. Ogden is a big city with a lot of variety, so this is an overview. Here's my honest rundown.

Getting around

Ogden sits about 40 miles north of Salt Lake City, between the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch. FrontRunner and UTA buses meet at Ogden Central Station, 2393 S. Wall Ave. From there you can take the train south to Salt Lake City and Provo. Downtown, the free Ogden Trolley (Route 601) and the Ogden Express (OGX, Route 603x) link the FrontRunner station, The Junction, Weber State University, and Harrison Boulevard. Commute times depend on traffic and where you're headed, so test-drive your route at rush hour before you buy.

Parks & outdoors

  • The Ogden River Parkway follows the river from town to the mouth of Ogden Canyon, near Rainbow Gardens at 1851 Valley Dr.
  • Ogden Canyon (SR-39) heads east from the city toward the mountains.
  • The 22nd Street trailhead on the east bench is a paved entry to the Indian Trail.
  • Lorin Farr Park (668 17th St.) has a playground, a pavilion, a skate park, and a pool.
  • The George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park (1544 Park Blvd.) and the Ogden Nature Center (966 W. 12th St.) are both in the city.

Schools

Most of Ogden is served by Ogden School District, which has two traditional high schools:

  • Ogden High, 2828 Harrison Blvd.
  • Ben Lomond High, 1080 9th St.

The district also runs elementary and junior high schools across the city, and Ogden is home to Weber State University. Boundaries vary by address, so always confirm schools for a specific home with Ogden School District: https://www.ogdensd.org.

Community events

  • Harvest Moon Celebration: Ogden's big end-of-summer street festival on Historic 25th Street each September, with local makers, a produce market, and live music. It's free.
  • First Friday Art Stroll: the first Friday of each month, downtown.
  • Ogden Twilight concert series at the Ogden Amphitheater, 343 E. 25th St.
  • Farmers Market Ogden and the Fall Market on Historic 25th Street.

Dates change each year. Check https://ogdendowntown.com and https://www.visitogden.com.

Homes in Ogden

Ogden was the first permanent settlement in what is now Utah, founded in 1846, and grew as a major railroad hub. You'll find a little of everything. There are older historic homes and bungalows near downtown, homes on the east bench close to the mountains, and condos and townhomes around the city center.
